Artist's Description

A flamingo at the zoo (number 13). The flamingos at Sacramento Zoo are so beautiful and vibrant they look like lawn ornaments, but I promise this one is real!

Flamingoes are a type of wading bird, Phoenicopterus (Greek meaning "purple wing"). It is unknown as to the reason they stand on one leg, but there are different theories as to why they do it. Flamingoes stamp their webbed feet in the mud to stir up food. They get their vibrant colors from aqueous bacteria and beta-Carotene from the food they eat. The color tells a lot about the flamingo like if they are malnourished or sick.
I don't personally care for the color pink, but I find flamingoes to be a very beautiful and interesting bird.
